As a result, English currently exists with a MASSIVE (Latin), HUGE (French) and GREAT (Germanic) vocabulary where even the word "GREAT" can be used to mean BIG or WONDERFUL. It also exists as a language with complex grammar systems - which is why learning from the rules has probably felt so frustrating for you.
